After all, 99% of buyers use the Internet to look for a home, making top-notch quality real estate photography crucial.

This often leads professionals in the real estate industry to ask, “Which photo editing service should I trust?”

If you haven’t come across PhotoUp yet or just want to see what other customers say about the company, this blog post is for you!

Today, we’re looking into the PhotoUp reviews and what customers say about this real estate photo editing expert. Let’s begin by taking a look at the company’s background.

What Is PhotoUp?

PhotoUp—a company that has garnered significant attention for its real estate editing and marketing solutions has been an industry expert for over a decade.

Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with offices in Cebu City, the Philippines, PhotoUp is the leading provider of real estate photo editing and virtual staging services.

Additionally, PhotoUp is a one-stop shop for real estate marketing and also offers additional services such as:

Property flyers

And more!

With 12 years in the business and hundreds of editors, it’s hard to beat PhotoUp’s quality, service, and pricing.

According to their CEO, Kristian Pettyjohn, this is what makes PhotoUp stand out:

“I would say the three big areas that set PhotoUp apart from our competitors are: USA support, a focus on building software, not just services, and most recently the introduction of staffing, that is, having photographers work directly with their real estate photo editors.”

Kristian Pettyjohn, CEO of PhotoUp

The old adage that time is money is as true for professional real estate photographers as it is for anyone else. The more images you shoot, the more of your time it takes, both on location and during the evening of photo editing that follows.

Shooting and delivering 40 images is going to take you a lot more time than delivering only 10 images. So if you’re going to stay in business, you’re going to have to find a way to charge your clients based on the number of images you intend to deliver.

So how many images are required for an average house?

As a real estate photo editing company, we have unique access to a cross-section of photographers from across North America and elsewhere in the world. Using the number of photos uploaded per batch to our system as a guide we can, therefore, approximate the number of images delivered for an average house. In order to minimize outliers, we only used members who uploaded more than 100 batches to our system to compile this data.

Based on our data, the average number of images delivered in North America ranges between 15 and 30 images for 74% of the photographers who upload to us with the average being 22 images per home. Almost half, 42%, deliver between 18 and 25 images per home.

Of the 14% who deliver more than 30 images per home, 70% deliver under 35 images and the remainder often works with builders who require images of the development’s amenities as well as the home itself – increasing the total number of images required.

The 12% who deliver under 15 images per home are more often than not photographers that shoot in large cities like New York where apartments and condos are more common or photographers that only deliver to us interiors and either don’t shoot exteriors or process the exteriors themselves.

The average number of images delivered per home in Australia and New Zealand tend to be much smaller, with most photographers delivering around 15 images per home. In Scandinavia, where there are a lot of apartment-sized units, the number is even smaller, with around 10 images per home being the norm.

So, how can you use this data in your business?

While there are many possible ways to structure your pricing, we suggest you base your pricing first and foremost on the number of images you intend to deliver. You might consider packages, for small, medium, and large houses or have a base fee for a certain number of images and then additional charges beyond this base.

Based on the data compiled here we suggest that for your base fee or your middle package if you go that route, you should promise to deliver between 18 and 25 images if you’re in North America and 5 to 10 images elsewhere in the world. If realtors require more images than this, we suggest that you charge them for the additional work.

Additionally, we suggest that if you’re routinely delivering more than 30 images per home, you should structure your pricing so that you are compensated for the additional time you spend shooting and editing additional images beyond the “industry standard”. Alternatively, photographers who currently shoot over 30 images per home may consider reducing the number of photos delivered to clients.

In addition to charging extra for additional images, you should consider add-on fees for additional editing services such as adding blue skies on cloudy days, touching up the grass, or cleaning up messy cords or garden hoses in post-processing. Not all houses will require these improvements and not all agents will want them, so charging extra will ensure you are not doing extra work when you don’t have to. Many of these enhancements are included for free in PhotoUp’s basic photo editing services and can be a great way to add to your bottom line.

Lastly, if you’re tired of processing this many images for every home, using a photo editing service like PhotoUp can be a great way to gain back your evenings. A scalable editing platform like PhotoUp even allows you to grow your business while spending more time with your family and less time sitting at the computer. If you’re interested in finding out more about what PhotoUp can do for you, check out our pricing page or sign up for one of our trial accounts by clicking on the create account link at the top of this page.

We recently caught up with one of our longest-standing clients, Kayle Barton of Kayle Barton Photography based out of New South Whales, Australia. Kayle has been a member of the PhotoUp community for over one year and has seen the company change and grow with his business throughout this time. We wanted to have a conversation with Kayle to discuss his experience with PhotoUp thus far and find out what made him choose and stick with PhotoUp as his company’s real estate photo editing service of choice.

Q: How/when did you first find PhotoUp?

A: I found you guys at the end of 2013. I had been “Googling” to try to find “photo retouchers” and “real estate photo editors”, anything that could help me out with my business. I stumbled across PhotoUp after constant Google searches. I read your “About Us” section and saw that you had just opened up about 5 or 6 months beforehand. On there, it mentioned that you guys had a combination of real estate background and photography background and there wasn’t anyone else in the market that had hit [real estate photography editing] on the head.

Q: What made you start looking for a real estate photo editing service or photo retouching service?

A: I’ve been shooting real estate for 10 years now, and most of that time I have been editing the photos myself. I just thought it was so time-consuming and that sitting in front of the computer for hours was one of the more boring parts of the job. Sometimes I would have to rush to get jobs done and I wasn’t getting exactly what I was hoping to out of the photos.

I basically wanted to get more workflow happening because I’m only making money when I am out shooting. When I’m sitting behind a desk editing, I’m not really making money. I had to find a better way of getting my photos edited because I couldn’t keep doing it myself.

I knew other companies around had photo editors, whether they were locally based or overseas. I thought there’s got to be somebody out there that I can find and that I can be happy with. I tried some other services based out of India but the communication was difficult and the quality coming back from them was very average.

Q: Can you tell us about your experience when you first started working with PhotoUp?

A: What I found was, it was really easy to communicate with you guys via email. There was no drama. Everything was laid out nicely and it was very simple and easy to follow step-by-step instructions in order to set up my account. I sent you some example images and explained to you guys what I liked and then started uploading practice images every day. I was able to give feedback on all of the processed images of what I liked about the photos and what wasn’t quite right.

It was pretty much like how it was all laid out from the get-go when you guys have explained that the more feedback you can put into it, the better the results will come out and the quicker it will be. I just had to pump the information into you guys and then you use that information to pump the quality back out. It was exactly like that. You could see an improvement with the team in every single photo set I uploaded.

Even though I don’t personally know the guys that edit my photos, you just have that trust where you can send them a bunch of photos and say, “Here are my photos. I want them to look great with the colors nice and bright” and you just know they are going to come back looking amazing! And they do, every time.

Q: What piece of advice would you give photographers thinking about using PhotoUp as their real estate photo editing service?

A: Don’t hesitate or procrastinate. Don’t wait and think that it might not work. Just jump in and do it. The sooner you do it, the quicker you will see results. Get [PhotoUp] your photos, send them through, and give them all the information they need. Give them your notes, your photos, your creative thoughts, whatever you need, and send it to them. Don’t do it tomorrow, do it today.

Q: What are some of the before and after numbers since you started using PhotoUp?

A: Since using you guys, I’ve taken on three new clients and possibly bringing on one more here soon, which is fantastic! In the last week, I had someone see my photos on my client’s website and they asked, “Who does your photos? They look amazing!” They were using someone else’s services and now I’ve brought them over as my client.

Also, in terms of numbers, your services have enabled me to grow my business so quickly that this financial year, which has only been 4 and a half or 5 months, I’ve invoiced the same amount that I invoiced all of last year. So, in about 4 and a half or 5 months, I’ve already invoiced my entire last year’s revenues. That’s amazing!

Basically, if business keeps on going the way it’s going, I’m on track to more than double what I did last year.

Q: What have you been able to do with the time that you are now saving by using PhotoUp as your real estate photography retouching service?

A: The free time that I have now has enabled me to spend more time with friends and family, which is something that I really do value. Also, with the spare time that I now have, I can invest that time back to try to get on top of other business aspects and help grow my business. Before [using PhotoUp], I never had time to satisfy the needs of that part of the business.

So, [PhotoUp] has helped me to grow exponentially where I can direct my time into different aspects of the business OR I can take the night off and go see a movie with friends instead of sitting in front of the computer and having to stress about getting photos delivered. So,[PhotoUp] has given me more of a lifestyle as well.

Q: What do you love about PhotoUp?

A: I love that it’s consistent, impeccable quality. Every single time the quality is better than 100%.

The turnaround time is incredibly fast, it’s just ridiculous. And, how simple it is to use.

I love how I can upload the photos and trust that they are going to come back looking perfect the first time, every time, every day of the week.

PhotoUp has been a complete game-changer for my business!

The New Zealand real estate photography market is on the rise and we are lucky enough to be working with one of the best in the business. Paul Vettoretti, owner of Vantage Point Photography, is an accomplished photographer who was able to turn his passion into a career. Paul has been shooting real estate in New Zealand for over 5 years and recently became a member of the PhotoUp community.

We asked Paul to sit down with us in order to learn more about him, his business, and his experience with using PhotoUp. Paul, like many of our other clients, got to the point where he could not handle all of the work on his own and needed help editing. Read the interview below to get the full story of how Paul has been able to leverage PhotoUp’s service to help him grow his business.

Q: Can you give us a little background on how you got into real estate photography?

A: I’ve had a lifelong interest in photography and I wanted to make a living out of it so I gave up my job in the city and started life as a photographer. I’ve been shooting real estate photography for the past 5 years. It was the avenue I knew I wanted to get into. I initially looked at franchises for real estate photography, but they wanted to add too high a margin, restrict me in certain areas and control the way I operated.

At the end of the day, I stopped looking at franchises and figured I would go into business on my own and do the difficult work myself because they weren’t offering me a whole lot more than I could make on my own. It took a while to get established and gain clients at different agencies, but we have been quite successful the last few years.

Q: What caused you to begin to look for a real estate editing service like PhotoUp?

A: I guess it’s a classic story… I found myself with more work than I could process in the daylight hours and I was working all night processing images. I knew there had to be a better way. I had been looking for a photo editing service for a couple of years, trying to find something that looked trustworthy on the internet. You can Google it and you can find that so many things pop up, but you don’t know where you’re going to end up and what they may be doing to your images.

I belong to a local camera club and I hear stories there about people’s images being stolen. You get them processed somewhere else and they end up who knows where!? Hearing all that stuff made me a little bit cautious, but at the end of the day the way that PhotoUp appeared online, your team in the Philippines and how you

are pumping money back there to support them, it had a nice feel about it and that’s why we made the initial contact.

I was getting to the point where I had to do something. We contacted you and found that process reassuring and easy. There was really no looking back once I started.

Q: Can you tell us about your first couple weeks of working with PhotoUp? What was your experience with the practice period account and starting to work with a team of editors?

A: We just followed the process PhotoUp set up. We supplied the images that were required over the first 4 or 5 days. We would submit one set of images and then give feedback, then submit another batch of images and give more feedback.

The images that were coming back were great! They were all images that I had processed myself before and I could look at them and think, “Well these guys do a good job!” I was impressed with that.

I had no problems with the practice period. It was good. It just went smoothly. We supplied feedback, got new photos and then it just seemed to come together quite quickly.

Q: What was the hardest part about beginning to use PhotoUp as your real estate photo editing team? What was the easiest part of the process?

A: Well I suppose that hardest part is that you’re going into the “unknown” in a way, aren’t you? Although everything looks great on the surface, you’re thinking, “Are they really what they say they are?” With you guys it felt good to start with and very quickly there was no doubt. Just the first few communications made all the difference. You guys were so enthusiastic!

The other thing that made me feel good was the fact that you had a big questionnaire that you had me fill in before I started. You wanted to know what kind of gear I used, how I processed, that sort of thing. That was great! I had to stop and think about the way I did things. It kind of opened your eyes up to the fact that people shoot differently as well.

Q: Have you had to change anything about your shooting style or your client interaction since starting to use PhotoUp?

A: No, not really. In fact, I haven’t told people that I use PhotoUp. My biggest concern was making the process seamless and that my client didn’t notice any difference. If they did notice a difference, it was a sudden improvement. As time goes on and I’m

more comfortable with what we are producing, I’m happy to mention to people that I use PhotoUp.

Q: Have you been able to see your business grow since PhotoUp became your real estate photo editing service?

A: What PhotoUp has enabled me to do is grow my business as a one-man organization and still get to bed at a reasonable hour.

I’ve got a nice feeling that the business will continue to grow. The next step is to employ somebody, and that’s a big step. You don’t want to lose clients because you can’t provide them the service, but I don’t know if I’m ready to grow to that level yet. That’s my next dilemma in developing my business.

In terms of what I have been able to do after work, my lifestyle is still very busy, but it’s a bit more relaxed. Instead of getting to bed at 2:00 am I’m might get to bed at around 11:00 pm or midnight. But this is only because I’m taking on so much more work. I’m still just a one-man organization.

Q: Have you been able to add any real estate photography tools and equipment to your arsenal to help you grow your business?

A: I’ve bought two things that have helped grow my business quite a lot. I used to cart a ladder around for my “elevator shots”. It was 3.6 meters and it was cumbersome and horrible. I was reading an American photography article online and I saw a thing called a Cam Ranger. You plug it into your camera, set up a Wi-Fi channel through an app on my phone and then I’m able to see what the camera is doing on top of the pole. So now, instead of using a 3.6 meter ladder, I’ve got an extendable swimming pool cleaning pole that goes from 4 meters to 6 meters. The camera mounts up there on the pole mount, I plug the Cam Ranger into the side of the camera and I’ve got the app on my phone so I can frame the shot, focus it, and do it all from my phone. Those elevator shots have become a breeze and there’s no more ladder.

And then there was the drone. I’ve been looking for a couple of years at a drone. I finally got introduced to them from chap I know in the fire service who was looking at drones as well. He introduced me to this particular model that he was playing with. The moment I saw it, I was sold. I had to have one of those.

I used to do work from helicopters to get my aerial shots but now I can use the drone. It’s great! It’s these tools and the technology that’s moving and helping my business. PhotoUp is part of that with the service that you offer by processing my photos to help my business grow.

Q: What advice would you give to people thinking about using PhotoUp as a real estate photo editing service?

A: Just put your toes in the water. If you don’t do that, you’ll never find out if it’s warm or not. Just take that first step. You guys are so easy to deal with and the fact that I can communicate with the people who actually own the company is awesome!

That was one of the first comments to my wife as soon as I made the initial contact. I said, “The chap I’m talking to owns the place!” That was impressive.

There’s a learning phase, and I’m probably still learning. The more you get involved and the more you provide feedback, the better it is. When you provide feedback, your editing team listens.

You’ve just got to do it. Take the Nike thing and “Just do it.” The process is easy. It doesn’t hurt a bit. I’ve just loved the whole experience.

Q: What do you love about PhotoUp?

A: I love the fact that I can come home in the evening, load my photos, and then they are there the next day. I don’t have to do much after that at all.

I love the fact that PhotoUp support communicates with me. They’re reliable. You can get ahold of them and they can get ahold of you. If there’s an issue, you guys handle it.

At PhotoUp, we are continuously looking for ways to interact with our current clients and find new and helpful resources for our new members of the PhotoUp community. We recently had a chat with one of our amazing clients, Philip Slowiak of Philip Slowiak Photography in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Phillip’s journey into the PhotoUp community was one that was filled with doubt and hesitation and he even went as far as to completely cut ties with PhotoUp at one point. However, by using the system to his benefit and his ability to be flexible with his shooting style and editing team, he has now become one of our prime examples of a how-to-use PhotoUp to help you scale and grow your business.

Q: How did you first hear about PhotoUp?

A: I found you guys on Google. I knew I was in need of a real estate photo editing solution and once I started searching, it didn’t take me long to find PhotoUp. There’s really just not anything out there that offer the same things you guys offer. It was a pretty easy find, to be honest.

Q: What were some of the initial struggles that you had when first using PhotoUp?

A: I’m not the type of person who typically likes to give up control of things. With regards to my work, the hardest part was the whole idea of assigning that responsibility [of editing] to someone other than myself. Even though I may not have found many other companies out there that do real estate photo editing, I did have other options available to me.

I saw a lot initially from your website that drew me in to give you guys a try. I really had a good sense of confidence that came about as a result of your practice period. I knew it was going to be a big task to go through training, but in doing so you guys made it really easy to get started. Right away, I knew that you guys were very dedicated to learning about me and what goes in my head when it comes to the final look of my work.

When I got my first practice images back from PhotoUp, I said ‘Wow! That’s awesome! It looks along the lines of what I want my work to look like.’ I was then to a point where I could really see PhotoUp being a solution that would work.

Q: How was the PhotoUp team able to work with you to learn and hone in on your particular style?

A: I have a unique lighting style. People really like it and they identify it as unique and different from what anybody else does. The truth is I have really built my whole real estate photography company off that style.

At first, I had a difficult time learning how to use PhotoUp, and to still continue to use my style of lighting. It was unique to me and very very difficult to replicate, if not impossible.

This was my second phase of “waking up” and having to “let go” in a way. I had to become comfortable with making adjustments to my style in order to be able to work with a team of people who have not been walking with me step by step for the past couple of years. I also had to get a better understanding of what is realistic in terms of what style could be processed on a large volume basis.

Q: Can you walk us through your decision to almost stop your PhotoUp subscription in the first month of live editing?

A: I kind of had to step away just so I could regain my confidence in my decision to use PhotoUp. In doing so, I went back into that kind of cycle of having to do your own editing at night and being so exhausted that you can’t even hold your head up anymore, literally. It was kind of round two of regaining that assurance that I was moving in the direction I wanted to move with PhotoUp.

When I decided to give it another shot, I had to be willing to make some changes myself. I had to change how I shoot and when I shoot in certain ways. And it’s still a work in process, but I’ve definitely come a long way with it and you guys have come a long way too. Now, I feel like we have established a good rhythm and that makes it pretty easy to come in at night and send PhotoUp images and move on to something else or go to bed as I should.

Q: Since returning, how have you been able to work with your PhotoUp editing team to help them hone in on your style?

A: In a way, it’s like a two-headed dragon. You’ve got two different individuals, me and my editing team, who have to operate as one unit. One of those heads of the dragon can’t be completely stuck on one thing and unwilling to improvise, while the other one tries to keep up. If you think that way, you never get any rhythm. For a photographer, you need to challenge yourself to adjust and to shoot in a way that you know your team will make look great.

I had to learn what you guys were good at too! I picked up on that as I went. I noticed things along the way where I thought, ‘Wow! They may not have done this specific thing the way I would have done it, but they sure did this a different way and that actually looks pretty good!’ That grew on me.

By being willing to allow that to happen, I was able to grow as a photographer as well. Personally, I like challenges because they keep me growing and getting better at what I do. I think a true professional photographer is flexible and good at adapting to circumstances in order to get good results for your clients.

It is very very hard at first. You may downright hate it at times. But, if you can get past that, then I think you will open the door to an opportunity that you will not find anywhere else. You’ll find a solution that you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re willing to do that, I think you stand to gain a whole lot more than if you fight against it, resist it, and get bent out of shape about it.

Q: What piece of advice would you give new photographers who are just starting with PhotoUp?

A: I was challenged at first with PhotoUp, thinking that I couldn’t be myself anymore because I had to do something that you wanted me to do. I had to learn to break myself of that mentality because you can still be yourself and you can still express yourself in your work in a way that will work with a team of people.

My advice is to commit to figuring out how to do that. If you do that, you’ll figure out how to make the system work. If you figure out how to make the system work you will be able to achieve a scalable and sustainable business.

Q: Have you been able to grow your business since using PhotoUp?

A: I can honestly say that since using PhotoUp, we have grown a ton! We’ve grown to the point where I can’t handle the load that is coming in by myself. Now we have two associate shooters and somebody who is just doing scheduling. That’s all come about since I’ve started using you guys.

Before using PhotoUp, I was shooting 6-7 homes per day and turning all of those around by myself. With PhotoUp, you guys came along and I was able to alleviate a lot of the tension and stress that was coming from editing myself. That allowed me to free myself up to grow the business in different ways. For me, my volume of shoots increased a little bit, around 80 homes per month. But I’ve actually been able to grow the business in other ways where financially we are making a lot more. I was able to increase my prices, improve communications and bookings, and increase my turnaround times.

Q: Since using PhotoUp, what have you been able to spend time doing?

A: In real estate, I found I was very tied down. Once I started a project, I couldn’t get away from it. For me, I am the type of person that needs to look ahead to the next big thing and then kick start that and develop it. PhotoUp was the first step in freeing me up to be able to innovate a little bit differently.

Ultimately, my goal is to be able to let my other photographers run their portion of the business. Now that PhotoUp supports teams, we have an easy way of sending people out to do the shooting and uploading themselves. It’s almost as if you can create a complete hands-off business in a lot of ways. I love that because I can keep what I created functioning and growing and at the same time, I’m able to look ahead to the next big thing.

Q: What do you love about PhotoUp?

A: This is what I tell my wife all the time… I love that my PhotoUp team is perched and ready to edit my photos. In this business, there can be no bottlenecks. Bottlenecks will sink your ship. You guys are there around the clock waiting and ready to go.

You guys are so fast at getting photos back to me that I hardly ever have any sort of delay in delivering to my clients. I have picked up a ton of business because of that speed and because of the responsiveness that I can offer my clients because you offer it to me.

If I were to hire one person to do my editing, they may get sick or they may go out of town or they may have a computer problem. When and if that were to happen, I would have a major setback. But with PhotoUp, all of that is gone.

We recently had a chance to have a conversation with one of our largest and longest-standing members of the PhotoUp community, Dave Davis of DMD Real Estate Photography, based out of Anchorage, Alaska. DMD Real Estate Photography has been shooting real estate throughout Alaska since 2009 and has grown to be one of the leading real estate photography companies in the state. Dave was one of the founding members of PhotoUp and has been part of the PhotoUp community for over 2 years.

We caught up with Dave to ask him a few questions about how he got started with PhotoUp and how he has seen his business and PhotoUp grow over the years.

Q: What made you start looking for a real estate photo editing service for your business? How did you first get involved with PhotoUp?

A: I was at a point with my business when I realized that things were getting very busy. I was shooting 3-4 homes per day, if not more, and I couldn’t keep up with the editing. I hired my own in-house editor but the cost was just killing me. Between taxes and her hourly wage, it was just too expensive when business got slow.

One day, Kristian Pettyjohn (PhotoUp’s CTO) walked into my office that I was sharing with a friend of his, and he talked about his team in the Philippines. That sparked my interest and I said, “Woah, if this guy’s got people working for him in the Philippines, maybe I can hire someone to have them work for me over there.” We determined that if I, a real estate photographer in Anchorage, Alaska, had a need for affordable real estate photo editing, there would be other people that needed this too.

I knew that there were other options out there in places like India and Asia, but I didn’t feel comfortable with the language barrier and the fact that I couldn’t call them when I needed support. I just didn’t feel comfortable with their solution.

We decided, “If I want this, I guarantee other people want this as well. So let’s do this!” So we began exploring how we could create it and from that conversation, PhotoUp was born.

Q: What’s was the hardest part about starting to use PhotoUp?

A: I’m not sure what the hardest part was? I didn’t find it hard to give up the editing piece which I think is what made me the perfect candidate for PhotoUp. What I enjoy the most is the photography. I enjoy being out with the client in the home and networking and building relationships. Sitting in front of the computer and editing was painful for me.

Having someone help me do the editing for me was actually a relief!

Q: What about the photos you receive back from PhotoUp?

A: At first, like anything, it takes time to get used to someone else editing your photos. Everyone has their own unique look and style. In my mind, editing is very subjective, so what I think is a good white balance, someone else may not think the same.

Over time, the editing team has improved and gotten much better at learning my specific style. Now, having dedicated teams of editors that work on my photos every single time, I think I’ve seen a much more consistent result.

Q: How have you liked our new subscription-based model and pricing?

A: I’m really enjoying this new subscription model. It’s a lot easier to use. I have my profile set up and my editing team knows what I want. We literally just put in the address, add any little notes that we may have, and then upload. It’s definitely streamlined the process.

I like the subscription model because it’s easier to budget and I now know exactly when my payments are going to be coming out. Before, with the on-demand model, I was constantly making payments to PhotoUp on a weekly basis. Now I have a bi-monthly payment schedule which is much easier to manage.

Q: Since using PhotoUp, have you been able to spend more time doing other things besides editing photos?

A: Oh man, I have so much more time! I’ve been able to really grow my team of photographers and I’m able to go home at night and be home for dinner.

My stress level has gone down as well. I used to stress about editing. It wasn’t something I really liked to do, so I it would stress me out quite a bit. Since using PhotoUp, I don’t stress out nearly as much.

Q: Have you been able to grow your business since working with PhotoUp?

A: When I started using PhotoUp, it was just me. Now, I’ve been able to grow my business to have three additional photographers and I’m in the process of interviewing a fourth. I’ve been able to expand my market to start shooting other areas outside of Anchorage.

In the past, my editor would have to work on my images the day after I shot them so it would take about 1.5-2 days to deliver my images to clients. Now, I’m able to deliver my images the next day.

When it was just me, before PhotoUp, the maximum I could shoot was about 3-4 homes per day and approximately 50 homes per month. Since using PhotoUp, I’ve been able to more than double those numbers. For the past couple of months, we have been photographing between 7-8 homes per day and consistently shoot about 120 homes per month.

Q: Is there any advice that you can give real estate photographers who are thinking about using PhotoUp for their real estate photo editing?

A: My advice to anyone just starting out with PhotoUp would be to have good communication with the team and be patient. It’s going to take time to get used to your style and preferences and hone in on exactly what you’re looking for in an edit. It’s going to take time to build that history so that you consistently know what someone likes.

If you just give a couple of images and they don’t come back looking perfect and you give up, you’re never going to get anywhere. You have to wait it out for a little bit and give your team some time to let your style sink in.

Speaking from previous experience, you’ve really got to make a commitment and run with it for at least a month, if not more.

Q: What has been your favorite aspect about working with PhotoUp?

A: It’s really hard to just pick one thing. Here are some of my favorite parts about using PhotoUp:

– It’s easy to use.

– I don’t have to edit.

– It’s affordable.

– I’m making a difference in someone else’s life.

But probably the part that I like most is that it is scalable. PhotoUp is built to be able to grow with my business. My business model is all about growing and developing a team. I want to add more photographers to be able to cover more areas and continue to grow, so having a scalable editing solution is key to how I grow my business.

There are a lot of real estate photography editors out there, but a lot of them are “one-man shows”. They may be a good fit at some point, but if I grow and I’m shooting 15 or 20 homes per day, they wouldn’t be able to keep up with that. Those companies wouldn’t be a long-term solution for me, whereas PhotoUp is a long-term solution when it comes to real estate photo editing, because they can grow with me.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with the PhotoUp Community?

A: You know, some people have a hard time with the term “outsourcing” or sending work overseas. My message to them would be that we’re all in this together. In this world, everyone needs a fair chance and everyone deserves an opportunity to make a living or to do what they love to do.

When I think about my editing team in the Philippines and know that I am able to help give them a job working with amazing people in a cool environment, that’s what makes me feel good.

One of the most rewarding parts of our job is being able to make your clients happy. We have had the privilege to work with some amazing and talented photographers over the past year and we continue to love the positive feedback that we receive from them.

One such client is Elena Seefeldt of ELS Studios, based out of Phoenix, Arizona. We took some time to have a chat with Elena to ask her about her experience with PhotoUp after working with us for over a year.

Q: When did you start using PhotoUp’s real estate editing service?

A: I began with PhotoUp during the Spring of 2013 so I have been using their editing services for just over a year.

Q: What made you begin looking for a real estate photo editing service for your business?

A: I wanted to free up more time for myself. I didn’t want to be up until 2:00 am editing pictures or be working on weekends or after dinner. Because the real estate market moves very fast, you need to turn around photos very quickly.

PhotoUp actually found me via Twitter. They began tweeting at me to check out their real estate photo editing services and offered me a discount for my first week of editing. So I checked it out tried out the service and liked it!

Q: How have you liked our new subscription-based model and pricing?

A: I think the subscription-based model is way easier to use! You don’t have to worry about what each job is going to cost or be concerned about choosing which photos you want to be edited. My editing team at PhotoUp knows which kind of sky I like, what I like done with the grass, and that I like my photos to look very natural.

Q: What has been your experience with using PhotoUp so far?

A: It’s been a really good experience all around. I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from the realtors I work with. I know that once I submit my photos to PhotoUp, 99% of the time they will have them back the next day. All in all, I have had a pretty smooth “flow” with the team at PhotoUp.

Q: What about the photos you receive back from PhotoUp?

A: The quality of the photos has definitely continued to get better over time. The more I upload, the more and more my team learns my style, and the less and less I have to give feedback notes. Now it’s more of my choosing my favorites and saying “I love that! I love that! I love that!”, instead of, “Next time, can you change this?” or “Next time, can you do that?”.

It’s not easy to edit pictures and make them look natural, but PhotoUp has been able to learn my style and do just that.

Q: What’s was the hardest part about starting to use PhotoUp?

A: Having someone else edit my photos was tough at first. But now, it’s easier to let go of because it allows me to spend time with my family and to do little things for myself that I haven’t been able to do in the past. Giving up the editing continues to get easier because the edits have turned out so great.

Q: Since using PhotoUp, have you been able to spend more time doing other things besides editing photos?

A: I have been able to shoot more homes during the day and spend more time with my family at night. I’ve actually been able to take a few more photography classes and a lighting class, which was pretty fun!

Q: Have you been able to grow your business since working with PhotoUp?

A: My business has grown a lot! I would say my business has doubled since I began using PhotoUp. I’ve actually been able to hire another photographer since I started with you guys.

I used to be photographing about 5 homes per week. Now, I’m able to photograph between 2-4 homes per day!

Q: What can photographers do to get the best results when using PhotoUp?

A: I try my hardest to take the best pictures “in-camera” that I can. Sometimes people might think, “Oh, the editors can do that” or “Oh, the editors will take care of that”. I try to do things like moving garbage cans or making sure blinds are in the right direction, or moving soap dispensers. Some other photographers just walk into a house and take the pictures however the house is set up. But I move furniture, clear up kitchens, and clear off countertops to get the best shot possible.

I try to do as much as I can so that the editors aren’t having to waste time doing all that stuff, which makes everyone’s job a little easier.

Q: What has been your favorite aspect about working with PhotoUp?

A: Getting my pictures back and being “WOWED” by the edits. The pictures are great!

Q: Is there advice that you can give real estate photographers who are thinking about using PhotoUp?

A: The communication is great! PhotoUp is always on top of everything. If you have questions, you guys are right there to answer them. The platform is very user-friendly. I’ve never had anything go wrong with my credit card or payments. So, I don’t think there is really anything that they should be worried about.

People need to realize, that you can’t do everything by yourself. You’ve gotta give a little to get a lot. At least that’s what happened to me! I wouldn’t be able to get more business if I was stuck behind a computer day and night.

I’ve been very happy with my decision to use PhotoUp.

Q: When did you start using PhotoUp’s real estate editing service?

A: My “ah ha!” moment came after I had a really good week of shooting but had to spend the entire week and weekend editing my photos. I was waking up at 4:00 am and going to bed well after midnight. I even got to the point that I had to turn down work.

I began searching for photo editing services and even looked into hiring a part time employee to handle some of my editing. I came across PhotoUp online, filled out a request form and began working with them soon after that.

Are they up to your quality standards? Can your clients tell a difference?

A: Most all of my clients have not been able to tell the difference between my photos and the photos I get back from PhotoUp. And the only ones that have noticed, only noticed small things that they really liked, like sky replacements and adding fires to fireplaces.

A: My business has definitely grown since I started with PhotoUp. I have been setting records throughout my business. My previous record for the number of homes I shot in one week was 16. This past month, I shot 23 homes in one week. My old record for the number of homes shot per month was 53. This past month I was able to shoot 73.

A: I have had more down time this month than I have had in the past year! I’ve been able to eat dinner with my family and spend more time hanging out with my kids. It’s nice to know that when I am doing these other things that my photos are being taken care of.

Q: What has been your favorite part about working with PhotoUp?

PhotoUp is as passionate about keeping me happy, as I am about keeping my clients happy. I feel like PhotoUp is really a part of my business.

The Favorites Button

You can find this heart button on the top right corner of all edited images. This button is used to highlight any images that you think we’re done particularly well. These images are then saved in your account to help train your editors on your specific style and the quality you’re looking for.

The Revision Button

You can find the revision button in the top left corner of your photo preview screen. Use this button when you receive an undeliverable image that you would like re-done. Please be sure to use the notes and the pin feature built into the revision request button to communicate directly with your editors. Simply create a revision note and then pin it onto your images to highlight exactly where/what you are describing in your revision note. You must create revision notes on all images you wish to have revised before you send revisions back to your team.

Examples of revision requests might include asking for a small object to be removed, asking for a different sky or a masking job to be redone, or situations where the white balance is just a bit off.

For step by step directions on how to request a revision, please watch the video below:

The Notes Button

Use the notes button on the top left corner of the screen to give small pieces of feedback to your editors on images that didn’t require a revision, but could have been improved. For instance, make a note when the white balance is within range but still seems a little too cool or a little too warm, or when you would have wished an image to be a little brighter or a little darker. Your editing team will review these notes before editing your next batch and make adjustments accordingly.

Batch Rating

Before you download your batch you will be asked to give your batch an overall rating. Please use the following system to rate your batches:

10 – the perfect batch, with no feedback notes and many possible favorites

8 or 9 – great batch, only one or two feedback notes or revisions with mostly great edits

6 or 7 – so-so batch, with some feedback notes and revisions and few really great edits

4 or 5 – not a great batch, with 5 to 10 images requiring feedback notes or revision requests

3 or below – very poor batch, with the majority of the images requiring revision and no great edits

After you’ve downloaded your images and delivered them to your clients, you can still go back and add favorites or feedback notes to any image. Note that not every image requires a favorite note or a feedback note, a great batch might not require any, but when there is something that stands out either positively or negatively, please use these features to let your editing team know. Hopefully, this little tutorial will help you navigate our feedback system a little bit better and help your editing team continue to deliver better and better edits going forward.

If you already have a team of photographers (1-50+) or want to grow a team and want greater control over your business data, sales growth and staff management, this article is for you. We go over best best practices and system development for scaling large photography businesses.

At PhotoUp, our goal is to help real estate photographers grow their businesses by utilizing our scalable photo editing solution. We offer a real estate photo editing service that allows our clients to spend less time editing photos, and more time doing what they love.

We often get asked questions about our photo editing service and why we chose to create a real estate photo editing business. In our work with real estate photographers, real estate agents, and potential home owners, we have found some very telling information about the industry.

The need for real estate photography is growing. The need for real estate photography is growing. Real estate agents are realizing that professional photography increases the chances of selling homes quickly. Professional real estate photography is now becoming the norm in the real estate industry as technology and interactive listing websites make it easier for potential buyers to view potential new homes on their home computer or mobile device. This has become apparent due to large number of real estate listings that are now using professional real estate photography. We have also noticed an increase in the number of real estate photographers establishing themselves across the US, Australia, and Europe.

Real estate photographers can only shoot and edit 3-4 homes per day. Real estate photographers quickly learn that they hit a ceiling when trying to grow their business. After speaking with our clients, a typical real estate photographer, working alone, can only shoot and edit between 3-4 homes per day (5+ hours photographing and 4+ hours editing). With PhotoUp, our real estate photographers are able to let us handle the editing, freeing up time for them to be able to photograph more homes and continue to grow their business.

Real estate photographers are looking for a quality, timely, and cost effective solution. With the growing need for professional real estate photography and the growing number of real estate photographers out there, it only made sense for us to provide a service that offered a scalable solution. With PhotoUp, real estate photographers are able to continue delivering their clients top quality photos in a timely fashion at an affordable rate. PhotoUp’s editing team works directly with each client to figure out their customized style and process of editing real estate photos. We pride ourselves on helping our current clients grow their businesses and get their time back.
